In September 2012, more than 14,000 jobs were advertised online for Recruiters and staffing professionals in the United States. We've seen a strong level of hiring demand in 2012 so far, far out-pacing pre-recession demand. However, we are starting to see a slowing in the number of new ads posted online each month. This similar trend has been seen in past year, so it may just be a seasonal effect. In September, the volume of available listings was up 12% compared to September 2011 and 29% versus the same time period in 2010.

The highest volume of listings during September seen in New York (NY), Washington (DC), Chicago (IL), Los Angeles (CA), and San Francisco (CA). The New York metro area had the most available positions. However, San Francisco experienced the greatest growth in demand over the past year of these five areas, up 36% compared to the same time period last year.

We've been watching hiring demand for Recruiters for a while and noticed that job requirements continue to evolve for this profession. In addition to traditional recruiting skills – like experience with applicant tracking software (ATS) and full lifecycle recruiting – there are several emerging skill sets that are gaining more traction every month. Two of these include negotiation and social media skills. The number of job ads that look for candidates with strong negotiation abilities is up 13% compared to September 2011. Job ads with social media requirements have grown even more incredibly, up 52% since last year.
If demand has grown since last year and the skills are changing, will open recruiting positions be hard-to-fill? Our Hiring Scale™ shows that they will be moderately difficult to recruit. On average, employers in the US leave job ads online for about 5 weeks. Companies in San Francisco, California and Minneapolis, Minnesota are currently experiencing more challenging overall recruiting conditions. There is more fierce competition among employers since demand is growing more quickly than the local talent supply can support. Job ads in this area remain online for an average of 6 weeks.

However, if you are a Recruiter in San Francisco or Minneapolis (or willing to relocate to these areas for a job), it's likely to be easier than average to find work. More companies are looking for your skills and it's likely that there are fewer candidates for you to compete against to get the job.
In comparison, we also see that it is less difficult to fill recruiting job openings in Jackson, Mississippi and Scranton, Pennsylvania. Larger talent supply compared to the hiring demand by employers in these metro areas means that Recruiters positions are likely to be filled easier and faster. The average duration of a job ad in these locations is 3.7 weeks, more than one week shorter than national averages. If you are a Recruiter looking for work in one of these 2 areas, you are likely to have more difficulties since there is less demand for your talent and a higher number of potential candidates you will compete against.
